Chapter 4

Exploring the second floor was easier said than done. The monsters may have been somewhat low level, for Kate and Inara at least, but they had numbers. The rock monsters could hide anywhere rocks were present, something that they quickly discovered was everywhere.

The first floor had been a rainforest, whereas the second was a rocky hill area with an abandoned city stretching out into the distance. Merely reaching the city proved to be a nearly insurmountable obstacle as they faced one ambush after another.

In the end, they were forced to retreat for a second time that day.

Ray was no longer standing in the entranceway when they returned a while later. A couple of unknown people who were staring wide-eyed at them had replaced him. The short stick they had been using to poke at the floating orb dropping from limp fingers. The makeshift armor they had scrounged together gave them away as tower climbers. It was a group that grew in size each day.

The girls didn’t recognize either of them. It was an occurrence that was becoming more commonplace as the population of the town expanded.

Looking at the people who had been so intent on the orb that had now returned to its normal size and position, the girls shook their heads and walked past them. It was only around lunchtime, and they were already exhausted from their efforts on the second floor.

“Come on, let’s get some food and plot out a plan of attack,” Kate suggested to her party members.

Inara merely yawned and stretched out, while Beth dropped a hand to her belly at the reminder of food. Breakfast seemed like forever ago, and they had been too busy to eat the jerky and other snacks they had packed. Grabbing Kate’s hand, Beth pulled her from the tower and across the bridge.

The November air had cooled as winter began to creep in before then hurtling full speed towards them. The sky was hidden by dark roiling clouds, thick with cold moisture that would soon begin to fall and cover the area. Kate had grown up in Kansas and could say without a doubt that the weather they had been experiencing was outside the norm. It had been colder than was normal for the season, not to mention the snow they had already gotten.

Beth stopped outside Kate’s house and pointed to the enormous satellite dish being lifted up to the top of the lab building. Charlotte’s group of scientists were directing its install and positioning on the roof. “What do you think that is for?”

Kate shrugged and pushed her inside, “Not sure, but I know Charles and Kira had been looking for one of those for a while now.” Pointing to the chairs in the living room, she invited them to sit while she pulled out some snacks for them to eat while they planned.

Inara snagged some of the treats and then hopped onto the couch. The large cat curled up into a giant ball, her quills laying flat as she fell asleep within seconds.
